I like what holisticmoms.org has to say about what Holistic Living is:

Holistic living is the art of living in balance with ourselves and our environment. Understanding and respecting that all things are interconnected is at the heart of a holistic lifestyle.

Holistic living is about taking responsibility for our actions and choices in the knowledge that these choices have consequences for all living things on the planet.

Holistic Housewives Heal With Lavender!

Before using toxic chemicals to treat you and your family, try using Lavender Oil!  A Holistic Housewife loves using natural remedies FIRST, before turning to stronger chemicals.  Here are some of our favorite ways to Heal With Lavender!

1.  Calm your nerves! All Housewives feel crazy sometimes.  Why not turn to Lavender: A Soothing Scent.  Sniffing lavender is an instant antidote to anxiety, according to a Japanese study. Put a few drops in your bath or how about in your diffuser?  This will help an overall calming effect to envelope your whole family!

2.  Sleep better, you and your babies!  In folklore, pillows were filled with lavender flowers to help restless people fall sleep. Scientific evidence suggests that aromatherapy with lavender may slow the activity of the nervous system, improve sleep quality, promote relaxation, and lift mood in people suffering from sleep disorders.

3.  Keep the bugs away!  Lavender oil has been used as a bug repellent for many centuries. Lavender was used in the past to protect clothes and linens from the infestation of moths and other insects. Try using lavender oil to prevent bites from mosquitoes and other biting insects.

4.  Treat eczema and skin rashes! Lavender Oil, due to its antiseptic, antibacterial, anti-fungal and circulatory stimulating properties has been used as a treatment for Eczema.  It is also an immune booster and powerful anti-inflammatory for the skin.

5.  Grow healthy hair! In one study of 86 people with alopecia areata (an autoimmune disease that causes hair to fall out, often in patches), those who massaged their scalps with lavender and other essential oils daily for 7 months experienced significant hair regrowth compared to those who massaged their scalps without the essential oils.

6.  Treat itchy scalp and dandruff!  Mixed with a bit of tea tree oil and apple cider vinegar, Lavender makes a wonderful treatment for dry itchy scalp and dandruff.  No more of that yucky blue stuff!  Often times, it’s the men in our life who need this.  Mix some up and keep it in the shower for your whole family to use.

7.  Get rid of lice!  Again, mixed with tea tree oil, Lavender can do a great job killing lice.  Say ‘no’ to those toxic chemicals and try tea tree oil and lavender first!

8.  No more indigestion! Drinking lavender tea may help relieve nervous intestinal disorders and indigestion. This is because it contains essential oils that have a soothing effect on the stomach. A study by the University of Parma and published in November 2004 in “Life Sciences” found that lavender oils protected against gastric ulcers and relieved indigestion in rats.  Try lavender tea with a bit of lemon and honey for a real treat.

9.  Headache Relief! Although we’ve been using it for over a decade, we now have proof! In 2012, a placebo-controlled clinical trial confirmed that therapeutic grade lavender essential oil aromatherapy is effective in relieving migraine headaches.   Try rubbing just a bit of lavender oil, mixed with a carrier oil, on your temples at the onset of a headache.

Benefits of Tea Tree Essential Oil

tee tree

What a wonderful plant Tea Tree is! The plant’s botanical name is Melaleuca Alternifolia.  The essential oil has many properties including being antibacterial, antimicrobial, antiseptic, antiviral, balsamic, cicatrisant, expectorant, fungicide, insecticide, stimulant and sudorific substance.  The tea tree is native to Southeast Queensland and New South Wales, in Australia, which is why it is such a common and popular essential oil in that country. However, its impressive qualities have spread to other parts of the world, so it can no be found internationally.  So, Tea Tree Oil does not, infact, have anything to do with what we usually associate with tea, green, black or herbal.

We absolutely believe that Tea Tree Oil should be in every Holistic Housewife’s bag of tricks.  Here are 11 of our favorite ways to use Tea Tree Oil.

  1. Use as an antiseptic for small cuts and scrapes.
  2. Dab daily on an infected tooth or gums. (We’ve had luck curing an abscessed tooth by using Tea Tree Oil 2 or 3 times daily.)
  3. Mix a bit of baking soda with hot water and add a few drops of Tea Tree Oil and use as a shampoo to help an itchy scalp.  This works great!
  4. It works great as a remedy for Ringworm.  Pictures coming soon.
  5. Use it as a mouthwash by adding a drop or two to water and swishing.
  6. Mix a little bit of Tea Tree Oil with warm olive oil and use to treat earaches.
  7. Dab on pimples to quicken (by a lot) healing time.
  8. Add a few drops to your hot tub water to keep it fresh.  Plus it smells like you’re at the spa!
  9. Cures athletes foot.
  10. Add a few drops to your load of laundry to freshen rags and/or diapers.
  11. Use with water and vinegar in a spray bottle to disinfect all areas of your home.  Especially kid stuff: high chairs, toys, car seats etc.

Tea tree oil is derived from the leaves of the tea tree. The tea tree was named by eighteenth century sailors, who made tea that smelled like nutmeg from the leaves of the tree growing on the swampy southeast Australian coast. Do not confuse the tea tree with the unrelated common tea plant that is used to make black and green teas.

Tea tree oil is applied to the skin (used topically) for infections such as acne, fungal infections of the nail (onychomycosis), lice, scabies, athlete’s foot (tinea pedis), and ringworm. It is also used topically as a local antiseptic for cuts and abrasions, for burns, insect bites and stings, boils, vaginal infections, recurrent herpes labialis, toothache, infections of the mouth and nose, sore throat, and for ear infections such as otitis media and otitis externa.
